Our attitudes and constitutional posture toward families in our state will affect how families are respected and treated in the long run. In 2009, I introduced a resolution that stated, “That parents and legal guardians have a natural and fundamental right to direct the care, education, and upbringing of their children, and that no government action shall burden, abridge, or hinder this natural, fundamental right unless it is in furtherance of a compelling governmental interest and is the least restrictive means of furthering that compelling governmental interest.”
As the former Chair of the Children and Families Committee of the Missouri House, I sponsored a parental bill of rights to help guarantee parents the right to make decisions of the care, healthcare, education and general upbringing of their children. I was successful at getting this legislation into a bill that passed out of the House. Unfortunately, the legislators running this country don't seem to understand the importance of allowing parents to raise their children. We are at a point where many bureaucrats now believe that government knows better how to raise children than their own moms and dads! We must keep pushing for this or we will find ourselves in a place where parents lose their rights to raise their own children.
